the end is nigh ?

April 5, 2017

It’s not often I come here to tell you about something that’s important enough I think everyone should take notice but today’s one of those days.  Last week I watched a film called A Plastic Ocean.  It’s a documentary about how plastic is affecting our planet, and also the direct effects of plastic on us.

Waaaaaay back when I first started this blog I shared this image by Chris Jordan:

This bird starved to death because it’s stomach was so full of undigestible plastic it could no longer eat.  It lived on an island in the middle of the Pacific, far away from the source of the problem, but plastic is nothing if not pervasive.  When it popped up in the film I was reminded that this is something that is talked about, kind of, a little bit maybe, just skirting the issue, but without really delving into how much of a problem plastic truly is.  We know, but we choose not to know at the same time.

Well, once you see some things they can’t be unseen.  Maybe they can be forgotten with time, but maybe it’s better if we choose not to forget, and instead choose to change.  To be the change.  Because the change starts with us.

I think A Plastic Ocean is important enough that every person on the planet needs to see it.

That is, if we don’t want to end up with a world not too distant from that seen in Pixar’s Wall-E (2008):
